BOW (86);

I’m very surprised by the amount of oak and barley on the nose of this youngster! I was expected much more alcohol on the nose. Vanilla, slightly burnt sponge cake, sweet barley. It’s not very heavy, but it’s quite rich.

The palate is pretty smooth, with initially a bit of buttery fattiness. It quickly becomes a bit more dry and brings some bite. Black and white pepper, with dry oak shavings. Sponge cake, vanilla, browned butter. Some baking spices too, clove.

The finish brings more warmth than heat, and this is where the youth of the whisky comes through most. It’s a tad spirity all of a sudden, with more unaged spirit showing up in the flavor. Still dry and grainy, with hints of alcohol sweetness.

Words Of Whisky:

Nose: There’s subtle notes of seaweed, honey and a slight minerality. The peat influence is like an extremely dialed down version of the herbacious, sauerkraut-y peat I associate with Ledaig. Some soft orchard fruits, as well as flax hemp rope. Quite rich and certainly intriguing.
Taste: Oily with charred peanut skins and gentle, earthy smoke, as well as a subtle salinity and green olives. A whisper of damp oak and honey too.
Finish: A touch of charcoal, some and salt with a sweet finale.

Score: 86

It’s the balance that stands out to me. This almost exactly fits into the flavour profile Ardnamurchan has been advertising since they opened. Seems like the Scottish west coast has another gem to cherish.
