The estate’s 2008 Solengo is an impressive wine, but not an easy one to understand in its youth. The tannins are rather imposing and the wine’s fruit isn’t as obvious as is often the case. Still, there is more than enough inner perfume to make me think this is one of those wines from a cool year that could surprise on the upside in another 5-10 years. Sweet dark blackberries, cedar, grilled herbs and French oak frame the intense, long finish. The wine continues to come together nicely with additional time in the glass. The 2008 Solengo will be a fascinating wine to follow in the coming years. Solengo is now 30% Petit Verdot, 25% Syrah, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. The wine spends 16 months in French oak prior to being bottled. It remains one of the most unique of the internationally-styled wines of Tuscany. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028.
Ripe and juicy, displaying blackberry, blueberry, smoke and spice aromas and flavors. There's support from acidity, with finely grained tannins and a deft use of oak. Still a bit crisp on the finish, but in time this should develop beautifully. Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
