Ultrasilky, with blackberry, cassis and plum notes, this red is both intense and ethereal at once. It almost seems too forward and easy, yet the supporting tannins build and it takes on more spice and licorice on the finish.
There is still a bit of wood toast framing the notably ripe aromas of roasted plum, spice, earth and Asian-style tea that are trimmed in an interesting smoky note. There is outstanding concentration to the robust, rich and overtly powerful medium weight plus flavors that possess a seductive mouth feel thanks to the abundant dry extract that push the very firm tannins to the background on the palate coating finish. This is an unusual '03 in that there is even a hint of austerity and while it could be enjoyed now due to the richness, this is packed with development potential. As such I would strongly advise giving this at least another few years of bottle age first and note well that it should reward at least another 10.
