Elegant and super-fresh aromas of airy red berries are nuanced by a combination of earth, forest floor, green tea and fennel. There is markedly better mid-palate density to the overtly mineral-driven flavors that flash focused power on the youthfully austere and noticeably more structured finale where a touch of wood surfaces. As is always the case with a competent example of Rugiens, patience absolutely required.
Dense purple, much headier than the other wines. Just a bit animal round the edges. Slightly tough tannins here. There is a great deal of wine on show for what is typically a lighter vintage, but still needs further development.
The 2021 Pommard Les Rugiens-Bas 1er Cru is Horiot's most satisfying aromatics from this appellation with raspberry, dark cherry and light floral scents. This has much more lift than the others. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fresh acidity, taut and linear with a slightly savoury finish. Not a big Pommard but it opens nicely in the glass.
