A huge wine on every level, the 2011 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco absolutely does not hold back in terms of intensity or persistency. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese, aged in new and neutral barrique for 18 months. Special work has been executed on the tannin management: Fermentation occurs in open cone-shaped vats with frequent, manual punch downs and long maceration times. The bouquet opens to baritone aromas of blackberry, espresso bean, cola, tar and anisette. Silky tannins wrap gently on the palate imparting a sense of firmness and power. You can count on a long bottle evolution nonetheless.
Impenetrable, deep crimson. Modernist nose of cassis fruit and oak, but not too ostentatious. Concentrated and yet contained dark fruit neatly matched by fresh acidity. Not highly original, but hedonistic and well grafted and could do with a little age.
