The 2004 Barolo Vigneto Cannubi is one of the stronger wines I have tasted recently from Burlotto. This medium-bodied Barolo reveals impressive depth in its core of dark red fruit, spices and sweet herbs. Fragrant and perfumed throughout, the wine offers notable poise and focus.
Flowers and strawberry bubble out of the glass. Full-bodied, with firm tannins and a clean, fresh finish. Bright, fruity and clean.
This vineyard is also in Barolo itself. A great cru. Traditionalist. They still crush some grapes by foot – ultra traditionalist! Based in Verduno – not one of the classic villages but there are some excellent crus there. Just 15 days' maceration and then aged in French not Slavonian oak. Some old barriques.
Very dense but with a haunting nose too. Splits the difference between tough and smooth. Very seductive with the dryness of the tannins sneaking in only at the very end of the palate. You could actually enjoy this already! Lovely roundness. Franco Ziliani says it may be overripe and lacking complexity but lovely for Barolo novices! Very lively and open.
