Candied lime, honeysuckle and lily scent the Deiss 2011 Altenberg de Bergheim, whose effusive suggestions of sweetness are borne out on an expansive, silken palate that features marzipan, quince paste, lychee, and liquid floral perfume. Hints of quinine and lime rind offer some push-back to the wine’s prominent residual sugar in an impressively long and luxuriantly rich finish. This liqueur-like essence is hardly the last word in dynamic complexity, and I wonder whether the 12-15 years of attention that it will almost surely merit will see its overt sense of sweetness significantly diminish, or whether instead its usefulness will remain confined to the same contexts as other botrytized libations commonly referred to as “dessert wines.”
