This has a beautiful bright purple colour. The fruit is exceptionally classy, which is why it deserves its place in the line-up, after the Clos de Bèze and Chambertin. Marvellous precision, almost a saline note in with the concentrated fresh red fruit, superb. Might this be the finest wine in the cellar this year? The answer in fact is no, because the Clos St-Denis is still to come.
Deeper colour than the Clos de Bèze; deep cherry. Immediately bigger (though not grander) than Clos de Bèze, with a richer profile, more savoury notes, firmer tannins and greater volume. Fulsome. Very much a grand cru, but less of the Clos de Bèze’s finesse. (MH)
Ponsot has referred to Griotte as 'the Lolita of Grands Crus,' a reference to its seductive nature. He farms 1ha of the appellation's total 2.56ha and the results in 2019 were delicious, with expressive red and black fruit, and a hint of spice on the nose. On the palate, the wine is fresh and silky, yet retains enough firm tannin to ensure that it will age gracefully for years. A wonderful balance for the vintage
Like the Latricières, the nose is ripe, cool and restrained while featuring elegant aromas of overtly spicy and earthy red cherry liqueur and discreet newly turned earth nuances. There is fine concentration to the intense, palate staining and muscular flavors that also coat the mouth with dry extract while offering a superbly persistent finish that is quite firmly structured. This beautifully balanced and powerful effort is almost lilting and overall, this is quite simply terrific.
