The 2012 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has an expressive bouquet of joyous red currant and pomegranate scents that join in the chorus line of raspberry and wild strawberry, all underpinned by the Bonnes-Mares joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied, linear, focused with very fresh acidity and a structured, intense finish that bears semblance to many top 2010s.
Five barrels – about normal production. In middle of the vineyard. Terres rouges and blanches. It’s a small parcel so it’s assembled from the start. Fred thinks that inside each climat the magic is to have big diversity which makes the wine complex, rich and well balanced. Separating the soils seems erroneous to him. Very sweet and fresh and transparent with such life! He thinks it has taken on a personality so strongly in the last few years.
Very fine and long. Charming. Polished cherry fruit.
The 2012 Bonnes Mares presents an intriguing push and pull between some of the more delicate notes that appear initially and its underlying, restrained power. This is another wine where so much is implied rather than overt. As always, the Mugnier Bonnes Mares is above all else a wine of restraint, although in this vintage, there is plenty of depth as well.
