Produced from vines averaging 55 years of age, the Clos De La Roche is a prodigious wine. I tasted three cuvees of it, one which still had not begun its malo-lactic fermentation (on January 24!), another that needed to finish its malo (10% left) and the third which had completed it, and had been recently racked. Purple/dark ruby-colored, this full-bodied behemoth displays explosive aromas of dark roasted blueberries, meat, toasted herbs and earth and a powerful, full-throttle, chewy, dense, wine that has layers of concentrated fruit, stones, milk chocolate and underbrush in its flavors. Brilliantly well-defined, extracted and deep, it possesses a significant quantity of fully ripe and round tannins that are discernable in the wine's admirable length. When all is said and done, I would not be surprised if it deserved a perfect rating!
