Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Echézeaux Grand Cru from Domaine des Perdix has a slightly disjointed nose at first, melds together a little with aeration, but stubbornly herbaceous and earthy at the expense of fruit expression. The palate is medium-bodied with light, sinewy tannin, well-judged acidity but a rather conservative finish that leaves you wanting more. It's just a little too slight for a Grand Cru? Still, I would contentedly finish a bottle!
?A ripe nose features notes of plum, dark berries, earth and a beautiful array of spice elements where the wood treatment is reasonably discreet though my no means invisible. There is excellent volume and plenty of punch to the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that display plenty of minerality on the delicious, balanced and lingering finish where the wood reappears. This compact and powerful effort is not particularly refined but has the balance to reward extended cellaring.
