Keller's 2020 Steinriese Oberbergen Spätburgunder GG is sourced from the eponymous Gewann in the Oberbergener Bassgeige and is characterized by the stony volcanic soil with high levels of limestone and iron as much as the 100% Burgundian Pinot Noir clones with very low yields. It shows a deep, very ripe nose of rather cool dark fruits reminiscent of iodine and herbs. Silky, fresh and vital on the palate, this is a powerful but also delicate and even playful Pinot Noir with stimulating salinity and impressively dense, aromatic length. This is a great Pinot Noir from the Kaiserstuhl. It was aged for 18 months in French barriques (40% to 50% new). 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork.
Steinriese is a site within the Oberbergener Bassgeige that has been newly elevated to GG status for the 2020 vintage.
Rich aromatics, slightly reminiscent of Mon Chéri (cherry-liqueur chocolates), velvety, opulent, indulgent, like sinking into your grandmother's armchair. Surprisingly lithe and finessed on the palate with delicate tannins and a fine, juicy grip. (PS)
