Mid ruby. Lovely bright transparency to the colour. Ripe, rich fruit and beautiful texture, Charmes seems such a flattering grand cru. Good length and soft, powdery tannins. Very balanced and integrated structure. (MH)
The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru includes around 75% whole bunches this year. The nose is more closed than expected, with crushed stone and forest floor scents filtering through the mainly black fruit. A bit sultry at the moment. The palate is more expressive with a very peppery, slightly stemmy entry. It has fine depth and grip - quite Mazi-like towards the structured finish that will require time in bottle to soften.
An equally fresh and slightly earthier combination consists of plum, rose petal and green tea plus a healthy dollop of wood influence. There is even better volume to the nicely rich and caressing large-scaled flavors that terminate in a moderately austere and impressively long finish. Even though this is not super-dense, there is still good power and it too should repay extended keeping.
Red to crimson in colour, deeper than the Echezeaux, crisper on the palate, with red berry fruit, a little strawberry, a touch of pepper again, slightly more body and length. Less floral than the Echezeaux, slightly more substance. Attractively floral aromatics left in the empty glass.
