The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Charrières derives from the upper part of a climat directly below premier cru Vide Bourse, planted with old vines on SO4 rootstock which now, in their old age, produce low yields of small grapes (Moreau also has holdings lower down in the climat, which there's less of a slope and fewer small stones, but that fruit goes into his generic bottling). Wafting from the glass with scents of lime zest, orange oil, white flowers, crisp stone fruit and freshly baked bread, it's medium to full-boded, satiny and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit and a racy, electric profile. This is clearly a superior site that deserves to be better known.

Benoît’s plot is right by the excellent 1er Cru Vide Bourse. South facing, this is the first plot to be picked. Just as pale in colour as the straight Chassagne, but there is more flesh to the nose, a touch of velvet. Definitely worth its place being bottled apart. Clean juicy fruit, ripe greengage, then a well extended finish with a trace of sucrosity.
