he Scotch Malt Whisky Society is delighted to celebrate the millenium with the bottling of its first ever casks from Distillery No. 114. Not only have we selected a truly exceptional whisky, but we have taken a piece of the original cask to create the bottle neg tag. Enjoy it, savour it. You will never taste anything quite like this again.SMWS Tasting Notes: This is unique example of Springbank's rare 'Number Two' whisky, made with their own heavily peated malt: 'unique' because we re-racked the original cask into a fresh port pipe in 1995. The port wood has given it a wonderful roseate blush with dancing red lights; a veritable 'come-on'. At full strength, the nose is both sweet and tarry, rich and hot, with cooked fruits and candle wax. With water it becomes sweeter, with a trace of carbolic and a whiff of smoke . The fruity complex is elusive, but reminded us of banana skins, and the taste is big and strong, both sweet and smoky, with a hint of nut oil and beach bonfires. It is unusual, since the smoke does not dry the flavour out, as one would expect; a perfect combination of sweetness and smoke, and a rare privilege to taste.
