Sasanokawa Shuzo is a distillery founded in 1765, located in Koriyama on the main island of Honshu. The company primarily specializes in traditional Japanese beverages such as sake and shochu. Since 1946, they have also been producing "Ji-Whisky," a term encompassing all Japanese whiskies crafted by specialists in traditional Japanese distilled beverages. These specialists sometimes engage in whisky production, ranging from 100% Japanese production to collaborations with foreign distilleries.
Since the establishment of the Asaka Distillery in 2015, Sasanokawa has been dedicated to producing whiskies that are distilled, matured, and blended in Japan. This commitment is evident in the company's first single malt release, Yamazakura The First single malt, introduced in 2020.
Crafted by the Asaka Distillery for Craft Spirits Nederland, this Japanese Single Malt is located in Fukushima. A portion of the malted barley used is peated and sourced from Scotland. The barley is then fermented and distilled in Japan. After spending several years in the cask, the whisky is bottled at Cask Strength with an alcohol percentage of 63.5%.
