Exceptionally impressive with floral and herbal notes, the 2021 Cederberg Syrah offers a kiss of reduction that keeps the expression in a tight frame. Medium-bodied, it has a firmness to the palate that will need some additional time to come around to loosen its grip. If you drink it young, enjoy it with food, and I recommend decanting it at least one hour before consuming it. It’s an absolutely impressive Syrah that exudes a sense of place with varietal character. I see where this is headed, and your patience will be rewarded. Bravo!
Mushrooms, potpourri, cocoa, cracked pepper and black fruit on the nose. More earthiness here, with a full body and broad, fleshy tannins. Meaty and stemmy complexity at the end. Sustainable. Drinkable now, but better after 2024.
The 2021 Syrah Cederberg comes from rocky sandstone soils located at 940m altitude, using 60% whole clusters to avoid too much tannin, matured in 2,000-liter vats, and kept on the lees. The well-defined nose has dark berry fruit, white pepper, clove and light flinty scents. It’s medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, quite saline and firm in the mouth and sapid towards black olive-tinged finish. I would give this a couple of years in bottle.
