From a higher and cooler site with loess covering the red sandstone soils, the 2022 Wachenheimer Altenburg P.C. opens with a pure, fresh and refined yet also intense and elegant sandstone bouquet with saline notes of crushed stones and phenolic notes from the grapes that are well exposed to the sun. The wine promises a generous character but keeps the purity and elegance of sandstone soils. On the palate, this is a generous and lush but also refined and elegant Riesling with saline acidity, fine tannins and an intense, full-bodied finish. The wine is long and persistently saline and way too young for near-term consumption. It's very promising, though, and in remarkable balance, with power that's uplifted by salts and other minerals. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork.
Imagine a beautifully ripe apricot and you have a very good idea of how this wine smells. On the mouth-filling palate you have all the golden fruits of autumn. Maybe it isn’t the most aromatically complex wine, but the beauty is hard to resist. Delicate salty and savory finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Wild-fermented in large neutral oak. Vegan. Drink or hold.
